No. 4 Men's Tennis defeats SMU, 6-1

AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 4 Texas (12-1) swept the doubles session and claimed five of six singles matches on its way to a 6-1 win over SMU (6-6) Tuesday evening at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
The Longhorns jumped on the Mustangs from the outset of doubles play and went on to take a 1-0 lead after sweeping the three matches. UT's 22nd-ranked tandem of Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico knocked off Tobias Flood and Pablo Perez by an 8-4 count at the second slot, and the 19th-ranked duo of Jean Andersen and Daniel Whitehead posted an 8-2 win at the third slot over the Mustangs' Artem Baradach and Chris Hooshyar.
Texas finished off the sweep at first doubles, where seniors Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala, the nation's fourth-ranked doubles duo, posted an 8-4 win over SMU's 37th-ranked duo of Adham el-Effendi and Darren Walsh.
SMU quickly evened the match with a win at first singles, but UT's Damico put Texas back in the lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Perez at third singles. The Longhorns put the match away with victories at the fifth and second singles slots. Zavala dealt SMU's Walsh a 6-4, 6-3 defeat at fifth singles, and UT's 10th-ranked Corrie knocked off SMU's Costa at second singles by a 7-5, 6-2 count.
Texas' Andersen held off SMU's Flood by a 7-5, 7-5 count at fourth singles, and UT sophomore Vasko Mladenov finished off SMU's el-Effendi at sixth singles, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
Texas resumes play on Friday, March 5 when it visits No. 33 Duke. The Horns are set to face No. 1 Virginia on Sunday, March 7 in Charlottesville, Va.
