No. 4 Men's Tennis blanks St. Edward's, Laredo C.C.

AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 4 Texas (11-1) split into two squads and posted a pair of 7-0 victories over St. Edward’s and Laredo Community College Sunday afternoon at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Texas finished off St. Edward’s in the doubles session and made short work of the Hilltoppers in the singles session. Redshirt freshman Alex Hilliard posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jon Stockdale at sixth singles, and senior Dimitar Kutrovsky defeated Justin Raiti by a 6-2, 6-09 count at first singles. Sophomore Jean Andersen dealt Mick Walter a 6-3, 6-1 defeat at second singles, and senior Josh Zavala posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Bernie Lancaster at third singles.
Texas finished off Laredo Community College in similar fashion. UT took a 1-0 lead with a sweep of the doubles matches. Junior Kellen Damico posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Leury Arias at second singles, and senior Rook Schellenberg knocked off Mateus Campos by a 6-2, 6-2 margin at sixth singles. Junior Ed Corrie dealt Cledson Carvalho a 6-2, 6-2 defeat at first singles, and freshman Ben Chen defeated Guilherme Narducci by a 6-2, 6-2 count at fourth singles.
Senior Jon Wiegand notched a 6-1, 6-3 win over Luis Rovira at fifth singles, and freshman Vasko Mladenov finished off Antoine Raffaeli by a 6-4, 7-6 (5) count at third singles.
“It was nice to get everyone a chance to play,” UT head coach Michael Center said. “We’re coming into a real significant stretch of our season. We will have to continue to improve in some areas if we want to figure out how good we can be this season. It was a good effort, but I see a lot of room for improvement.”
Texas resumes play on Tuesday, March 2 against SMU in Austin. First serve is set for 6 p.m. Central at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
