AUSTIN, Texas - No. 4 Texas (10-1) collected the doubles point and registered victories in five of six singles matches on its way to a 6-1 victory over SMU Saturday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
The match, which had been previously scheduled to be played earlier this month, was delayed over two hours due to persistent light rain in Austin. UT opened the match by winning the doubles point for the 10th time in 11 matches. Senior Kellen Damico and freshman David Holiner opened with an 8-3 win over Artem Baradach and Adham el-Effendi at first doubles. UT clinched the doubles point at third doubles, where freshman Vasko Mladenov and sophomore Chris Camillone dealt David Costa and Mischa Nowicki an 8-3 defeat. The Horns closed out the doubles session at No. 2 where senior Ed Corrie and sophomore Daniel Whitehead defeated Tobias Flood and Joe Hattrup, 8-3.
Damico made short work of SMU's Costa and tacked on to the Texas lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles. Freshman Sudanwa Sitaram staked Texas to a 3-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-1 win over el-Effendi at sixth singles. UT's Whitehead clinched the match for the Longhorns at fourth singles, where he posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nowicki.
Texas' Mladenov pushed the UT lead to 5-0 at third singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bryan Griffin. The Longhorns' cushion extended to 6-0 when Holiner finished off SMU's Flood by a 7-6, 6-4 count at fifth singles. SMU picked up its lone point of the match at first singles where Baradach defeated UT's Corrie by a 7-5, 6-4 count.
