No. 2 Men's Tennis tops TCU, 4-1, advances to ITA National Team Indoors
Feb. 1, 2009
AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 2 Texas (4-0) took the doubles point and picked up singles wins from juniors Dimitar Kutrovsky, Josh Zavala and Olivier Sajous en route to a 4-1 victory over No. 33 TCU Sunday in the finals of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The win gives Texas a berth in the upcoming ITA National Team Indoor Championships set for Feb. 13-16 in Chicago.
Texas took an early command of the doubles session and nailed down two wins to capture the doubles point. Kutrovsky and Zavala posted an 8-4 win at second doubles over Emanuel Brighiu and Adrian Simon, and UT nailed down the point with an 8-3 win at the third slot from Miguel Reyes Varela and Jon Wiegand over TCU's Jack Seider and Zach Nichols.
Kutrovsky made short work of Brighiu at first singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 to stake Texas to a 2-0 lead. TCU's Kriegler Brink drew the Horned Frogs within 2-1 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over UT sophomore Kellen Damico at second singles, but Zavala responded with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the sixth slot over TCU's Chris Price to push the Texas lead to 3-1.
Texas had simultaneous opportunities to clinch the match from Sajous and Reyes Varela, and Sajous finished off his match first to nail down the Longhorns' victory. Sajous defeated TCU's Simon, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at the fifth slot.
"We're excited to have received a berth in the ITA National Team Indoors with this win, and TCU really made us earn it," UT coach Michael Center said. "Both teams showed a lot of toughness, and I'm happy our guys were able to stick it out and finish off the win. I give TCU a lot of credit. That's a team who will beat some very good college tennis teams this year. We've got some work to do to get better, but in the meantime, we're thrilled to go back to the ITA National Indoors for a third straight year."
In the first match of the day, South Florida defeated UC-Santa Barbara by a 5-2 count to secure third place in the ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Austin site.
Texas awaits another difficult test on Friday, Feb. 6 when it meets No. 18 Texas A&M in a renewal of the Texas Cup, a series of non-conference matches played at The Downtown Club at The Met in Houston.
