No. 17 Texas falls to No. 9 Kentucky In ITA Kick-Off Regional Final

LEXINGTON, Ky. - No. 9 Kentucky (5-0) handed No. 17 Texas (4-1) its first loss of the season Saturday evening at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Center. The Wildcats took the doubles point and won three singles matches in their 4-1 victory over the Longhorns in the ITA Kick-off Lexington Regional Final.
"It was a tough college tennis match tonight," head coach Michael Center said. "Once again we had several opportunities in doubles but came up a little short. We were fighting back in singles, down 2-0, got on the board and the lost two pretty tough matches at the end. We learned a lot about our team tonight and we have some things we have to work on before we face USC next week."
Kentucky's Tom Jomby and Kevin Lai, ranked 35th nationally, defeated UT's Nick Naumann and Chris Camillone at the first doubles slot 8-6. At No. 2 doubles, the Wildcat duo of Alejandro Gomez and Ryuji Hirooka dealt David Holiner and Daniel Whitehead a narrow 8-6 loss to secure the doubles point and a 1-0 lead for Kentucky. UT's Soren Hess-Olesen and Ben Chen led 7-6 at the third doubles slot before their match was suspended.
The Wildcats pushed their lead to 2-0 when 15th-ranked Tom Jomby's defeated Sudanwa Sitaram 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
UT's Lloyd Glasspool secured the lone Longhorn point with his 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over UK's Juan Pablo Murra at No. 4 singles. Glasspool improved to 4-0 in dual singles play on the season.
Kentucky then narrowly defeated Texas with upsets in the No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches. First, No. 94 Anthony Rossi beat No. 31 Soren Hess-Olesen at the first singles spot 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Kentucky's Alejandro Gomez, ranked 97th in the nation, then upset 43rd-ranked Daniel Whitehead 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 to clinch the match for the Wildcats.
Texas returns to action on the road Friday, Feb. 1 to face the second-ranked USC Trojans in Los Angeles, Calif.
