LEXINGTON, Ky. – No. 17 Texas men’s tennis defeated No. 40 South Carolina, 4-1, to open the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the University of Kentucky’s Boone Tennis Center on Friday evening.
The Longhorns (4-0) narrowly lost the doubles point to begin the dual, but won the first four matches in singles competition to clinch the dual victory and hand South Carolina (4-1) its first loss of the season.
“Overall it was a good win,” head coach Michael Center said. “With the doubles and this no-ad scoring format, there are a lot of key points that are happening. The guys came back strong again in singles and did a really came together as a team.”
In doubles, UT and USC split the first two points as Nick Naumann and Chris Camillone lost on the No. 1 line and Soren Hess-Olesen and Ben Chen won in the No. 3 position. South Carolina’s Kyle Koch and Harry Menzies rallied from a 6-3 deficit against David Holiner and Daniel Whitehead to win on a tiebreaker.
Texas responded in singles competition by winning its first four matches to clinch the team victory for the Longhorns. Whitehead was the first to finish, swiftly defeating Chip Cox in straight sets (6-3, 6-1). No. 43 Sudanwa Sitaram and No. 31 Soren Hess-Olesen followed suit with straight set wins in the No. 2 and No. 1 positions, respectively.
Lloyd Glasspool improved to 3-0 in dual singles competition this season with a match-clinching victory against Kyle Koch (6-2, 4-6, 6-2).
Texas will face host No. 9 Kentucky on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT in the ITA Kick-Off Lexington Regional final. The winner of the regional will be one of 16 teams that will compete for the ITA National Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash., in mid-February.
