Jan. 15, 2012
DALLAS - No. 19 Texas (1-0) swept the doubles session and won four of six singles matches en route to a 5-2 win over host SMU (0-1) Sunday afternoon at the Dallas Country Club. "We had a lot of guys out there for the first time in dual matches, and the guys played well," UT head coach Michael Center said. "There were a couple of situations where we had to turn the match around with Daniel Whitehead and Sudanwa Sitaram, but they did a good job of finishing their matches." Texas handily won the doubles point to assume an early 1-0 lead. Freshman Jacoby Lewis teamed up with sophomore Sudanwa Sitaram to post an 8-4 win at third doubles over SMU's Mischa Nowicki and Robert Sajovich. The Horns clinched the doubles point at the second slot, where sophomore David Holiner and junior Daniel Whitehead posted an 8-6 win over the Mustangs' Arturs Kazijevs and Gaston Cuadranti. Texas sealed the doubles session with a win at the first slot, as junior Alex Hilliard and freshman Soren Hess-Olesen dealt Joseph Hattrup and Tobias Flood a 9-8 defeat. Texas assumed a 2-0 lead when Hess-Olesen finished off Cuadranti by a 6-0, 6-2 count at first singles. SMU's Kazijevs responded with a 6-3, 6-4 win over UT's Holiner at fourth singles, but Texas extended its lead soon after. Sitaram outlasted SMU's Flood at third singles, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, and UT's Glasspool clinched the match at fifth singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over SMU's Hattrup.
Texas' 112th-ranked Whitehead staked the Horns to a 5-1 lead at second singles, where he posted a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over SMU's Nowicki. SMU's Sajovich closed the match with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Texas' Lewis at sixth singles. "We played with a lot of poise, and I didn't feel that anyone got flustered," Center added. "They all stayed the course. We had some up-and-down moments, which I expected with our first match. This team is really built to compete from beginning-to-end really well. We'll continue to get better as the season progresses because of that." Texas resumes dual-match play on Friday, Jan. 20 when it visits Rice. |
