Jan. 15, 2011
TULSA, Okla. -- No. 5 Texas (1-0) claimed the doubles point and added four singles wins en route to a 5-2 win over No. 19 California (1-1) in the Horns' season opener at the University of Tulsa's Michael Case Tennis Center. Texas and California split the first two doubles matches, which left the outcome of the doubles point to the decision at third doubles. UT's fifth-ranked tandem of senior Ed Corrie and junior Jean Andersen topped Cal's 13th-ranked duo of Christoffer Konigsfeldt and Nick Andrews at first doubles, 8-6, and UT sophomores Vasko Mladenov and Ben Chen nailed down the doubles point by outlasting Cal's 17th-ranked duo of Carlos Cueto and Jonathan Dahan, 9-8 (5) at third doubles. Andersen pushed the Texas lead to 2-0 with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win over Cal's 50th-ranked Konigsfeldt at second singles. UT's 78th-ranked Mladenov staked UT to a 3-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Cal's Riki McLachlan at fifth singles before Texas' 100th-ranked Chen put away the Golden Bears with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Cal's Andrews at fourth singles. Cal picked up a win at first singles before UT senior Kellen Damico notched a 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 win over Cal's 59th-ranked Cueto at third singles to give Texas a 5-1 lead. UT freshman Sudanwa Sitaram engaged in a lengthy three-set battle with Ben McLachlan at sixth singles before falling by a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4) count. "This was a great way to start the year," said UT assistant coach Ricardo Rubio. "The doubles point came down to a tiebreaker at the No. 3 slot, and we showed great composure throughout the doubles and singles sessions. We need to be prepared to go head-to-head against a very good Tulsa team on Sunday."
Texas will take on host Tulsa on Sunday at noon at the Michael Case Tennis Center. Live scoring and video will be available at TulsaHurricane.com.
