Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving take second at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas men's and women's swimming and diving teams both finished in second place after the final day of competition at the Texas Invitational at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on Saturday.

At the conclusion of the final day, the Texas men's squad finished with 619 team points, just four points below 2005 team champions Arizona with 623 points. Southern California rounded out the top three for the men with 486 points. Meanwhile, Texas' women's team finished with 652 points to take second, while Arizona took the 2005 team championship with 724 points, Wisconsin was third with 525 points after the last day.

On the men's side, Caleb McDermott started the night with a NCAA consideration qualifying time in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:45.47.

In the men's 100-yard freestyle, Jeremy Harris (44.33), Matthew McGinnis (44.30) and Garrett Weber-Gale (43.61), all qualified under NCAA consideration standards. Weber-Gale took fourth, while McGinnis took sixth overall.

Christian Schurr took second overall in the men's 200-yard breaststroke with a NCAA consideration qualifying time of 1:58.37 in the finals.

Michael Klueh finished the men's 200-yard butterfly with a NCAA consideration time of 1:48.50, just over his preliminary race time of 1:48.31 to place seventh in the finals.

In the last race of the night, the Texas "A" 400-yard freestyle relay team placed third overall with a NCAA consideration qualifying time of 2:56.07, almost three seconds faster than their preliminary time of 2:59.00.

On the women's side, Elizabeth Wycliffe started the night with a 1:56.13 automatic NCAA qualifying time in the 200-yard backstroke. Rebecca Orr and Alison Soelter qualified under NCAA considerations standards in the same event with times of 2:01.56 and 1:59.47, respectively.

In the women's 100-yard freestyle, Texas qualified the trio of Jaclyn Faulkner, Lina Petersson and Hee-Jin Chang with time of 50.30, 50.23 and 50.42, respectively, all NCAA consideration-qualifying times.

Alexi Spann took third overall in the women's 200-yard breaststroke with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 2:14.16.

In the last race of the meet for the women, Texas qualified both relay teams in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The "B" team took second place in the consolation final with a time of 3:24.36, while the Texas "A" team took third overall with a time of 3:20.73 in the finals.

The University of Texas men's swimming and diving program will return action Jan. 13 when they host Auburn in a dual meet and Jan. 14 when they host Georgia also in dual meet action.

The UT women's swimming and diving team will return action Jan. 14 when they host Georgia in dual meet action.
