Men's Swimming and Diving sends five to day three finals at Texas Invitational
AUSTIN, Texas -- UT freshman Ricky Berens' second-place swim in the 200-yard butterfly highlighted the Longhorns' performance Saturday morning in the day three preliminary round of the Texas Invitational. Berens (Charlotte, N.C.) took second in the event and recorded a NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 1:45.89. Sophomore Michael Klueh (Evansville, Ind.) and junior Caleb McDermott (Canyon Lake, Texas) each earned spots in Saturday evening's 200 backstroke final with qualifying swims during the preliminary round. Klueh took fourth in 1:44.69 while McDermott placed fifth in 1:45.56. Each mark fell under the NCAA provisional-qualifying standard. Klueh will add another individual event, the 1,650 freestyle, to his schedule for tonight's finals. Rounding out the individual finalists for Texas were junior Matt Lowe (Minot, N.D.) and senior Garrett Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wis.). Lowe posted a seventh-place time of 2:00.76 in the 200 breaststroke for a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark, and he will be joined in the finals by world-record holder and former Longhorn Brendan Hansen, took captured the preliminary in 1:56.59. Weber-Gale, the defending NCAA 100 freestyle champion, placed seventh in the 100 freestyle preliminary round in 43.89, also good for a NCAA "B" cut mark. The men's platform-diving finals are set for 1:30 p.m. with the swimming finals set for a 6 p.m. start at the Texas Swimming Center. A live results link will be available at TexasSports.com.
