White tops Orange in annual exhibition, 88-73

AUSTIN, Texas -- Junior Caleb McDermott (Canyon Lake, Texas) and freshman Ricky Berens (Charlotte, N.C.) scored two victories apiece to lead the White team to an 88-73 victory Friday in the annual Orange-White exhibition at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Sophomore Michael Klueh (Evansville, Ind.) led the Orange squad with a pair of individual victories. Senior Tommy Sacco (Dallas, Texas) opened tahe meet with a victory in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking a winning time of 49.44. Senior Tyler O'Halloran (Boardman, Ohio) put team Orange on the board again with a win in the 100-yard breaststroke at 56.29. Berens gave team White its first victory when he took the 100-yard butterfly in 48.22.

Klueh tallied his first victory of the day in the 1000-yard freestyle, winning in 9:41.03 to give the Orange team its third win. Junior Matt McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C.) closed the gap for team White with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle, as he was victorious in 1:37.44. Senior Garrett Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wis.) captured the 50-yard freestyle for team White in 20.96.

McDermott collected his first victory of the afternoon in the 200-yard individual medley with a winning time of 1:52.80 for team White before freshman Mike Wong (Cerritos, Calif.) claimed the one-meter diving event with a score of 223.80. Berens garnered his second victory in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:47.60.

In the 100-yard freestyle, junior Chris Seitz (Taylor Mill, Ky.) defeated Weber-Gale, the defending NCAA 100-yard freestyle champion, in 45.96, topping Weber-Gale by 22 one-hundredths of a second. McDermott added his second win with a top time of 1:48.61 in the 200-yard backstroke before Klueh chipped in his second victory, winning the 500-yard freestyle in 4:30.74.

Senior Bailey Gao (Delta, British Columbia) claimed the final win for team Orange, winning the three-meter diving event with a total of 274.50. Junior Matthew Lowe (Minot, N.D.) took the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:07.50.

Team White's 400-yard freestyle relay quartet of freshmen Colin Murtagh (Toledo, Ohio), Ben Van Roekel (Ankeny, Iowa), Hill Taylor (Birmingham, Ala.) and Seitz put the finishing touches on its victory with a winning time of 3:02.27.

Texas kicks off the regular season on Friday, Oct. 13 at the Big 12 Relay Meet in Lincoln, Neb.
