Aug. 19, 2010
IRVINE, Calif. -- Texas-Ex Ricky Berens swam the third leg of Team USA's 800-meter freestyle relay and helped the Americans win gold in the event Thursday night on day two of the 2010 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships, the premier international meet this year. Berens joined Michael Phelps, Peter Vanderkaay and Ryan Lochte - the same quartet that won the gold medal in the event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics - to easily win the gold medal Thursday evening in 7 minutes, 3.84 seconds, good for a new meet record. Japan edged Australia for the silver medal in 7:11.01. Berens split 1:46.49 on the relay's third leg after Phelps led off in 1:45.62 and Vanderkaay split 1:46.46 on the second leg. Lochte anchored the relay to victory in 1:45.27. Berens also helped the Americans win the same relay at the 2009 FINA World Championships, where he was joined by Texas-Ex Dave Walters. In other action Thursday, Texas-Ex Garrett Weber-Gale won the 100-meter freestyle consolation final in 48.73 seconds. Texas senior Scott Spann placed 13th in the 100-meter breaststroke preliminary round in 1:01.12.
