Peirsol advances to 200m backstroke semifinals at Beijing Olympics

BEIJING -- Texas-Ex Aaron Peirsol began his quest for a second gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics by taking second in the 200-meter backstroke preliminary Wednesday evening to lock up a spot in Thursday's semifinals.

Peirsol won the fifth preliminary heat in to qualify second overall in 1:56.35. American Ryan Lochte qualified first in 1:56.29. Peirsol's 200m backstroke semifinal swim will go off Wednesday at approximately 9:21 p.m. and will not be televised live on NBC. Peirsol is the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the event and also took silver in the 200 back at the 2000 Athens Olympics.

UT junior Scott Spann, a University of Michigan transfer, will go for gold in the 200m breaststroke after qualifying third in the semifinals. Spann's finals appearance will air live Wednesday on NBC at approximately 9:03 p.m. Central. Incoming UT women's swimming freshman Kathleen Hersey will compete in the 200m butterfly finals that are set to air live on NBC at approximately 9:42 p.m. Central.
