Longhorns dominate 400-meter freestyle relays at 2004 National Championships

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The University of Texas men’s and women’s 400m freestyle relay squads each captured national championships for the second time in as many years, Thursday, Aug. 5, on the third day of competition at the 2004 ConocoPhillips National Championships at Stanford University.

In the women’s 400m freestyle, a trio of Longhorns teamed with Andrea Axtell to post the winning time of 3:48.76. Senior Kaela Humphries (Chaska, Minn.), a member of the 400m freestyle relay national championship team in 2003, led off the event with UT alum Tanica Jamison (1999-2003) and junior Kristin Siminski (Portage, Ind.) swimming the third and anchor legs, respectively.  Texas also added an eighth-place finish when sophomore Katie Robinson (Dillsboro, Ind.), junior Jaclyn Faulkner (New Orleans, La.), senior Paige Nath (Wichita, Kan.) and freshman Hayley McGregory (Houston, Texas) posted a time of 3:53.28.

In the men’s event, sophomore Garrett Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wis.) anchored the 400m freestyle squad that posted a winning time of 3:25.59.  The team also featured sophomores Tyler O’Halloran (Boardman, Ohio) and Poston Pritchett (Durham, N.C.) and freshman Daniel Rohleder (Austin, Texas).  Weber-Gale, who captured his first individual national championship on Wednesday, Aug. 4 in the 100-meter freestyle, also was a member of the victorious 400m freestyle relay squad one year ago.  In 2003, Weber-Gale teamed with then- sophomore Gregor Greiner (Abilene, Texas), former Longhorn Neil Walker (1996-98) and Christian Lindberg to post a winning time of 3:21.25 at nationals.

Individually, Weber-Gale posted the second-fastest time (1:51.01) of the day in the 200m freestyle during the finals of the “B” swim. Senior Alisa Schuknecht (Bend, Ore.) and junior Wade Kelley (Marietta, Ga.) each posted strong performances in the women’s and men’s 400m individual medley, respectively.  Schuknecht finished fourth with a time of 4:52.12 on the women’s side, while Kelley touched the wall in 4:35.85, good for eighth in the men’s race.

The 2004 National Championships continue Friday with the men’s and women’s 100m backstroke, 400m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 100 butterfly and 800m freestyle relay.  For complete coverage of the National Championships, visit .
