Men's Swimming to send 34 to Olympic Trials

OMAHA, Neb. – There will be 34 current and former University of Texas Men’s Swimmers heading to the Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. June 25-July 2. The trials will be held at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. The prelims will begin at 10 a.m. (CDT) each day while the finals take place at 6:45 p.m. (CDT). A total of 26 men and 26 women will represent the U.S. at the 2012 Olympic Games. Each of the top two swimmers in every event, plus four more in the 100m and 200m will qualify for the National Team the U.S. will send to London. Among the 34 UT swimmers going to Omaha, 25 are from the 2011-12 roster and nine are former Longhorns. There are four gold medalists competing at trials for UT. Brendan Hansen won gold medals in both the 2004 and 2008 Olympic games. Garrett Weber-Gale won two gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics while Ricky Berens and Dave Walters each came home with one. Two Texas individuals captured NCAA Championships this past March with Jimmy Feigen winning the 50 and 100 freestyle events and Dax Hill winning the 200 freestyle. The two swimmers will compete in the sprint events again at trials. Austin Surhoff is the swimmer with the most schedule events as he is lined up to swim in six different events. Entering the trials, there are many swimmers who are seeded among the top in their events. Ranking in the top 10 are Michael Klueh in the 400 freestyle (4th) and 1500 freestyle (5th), Michael McBroom in the 1500 freestyle (6th) and 400 freestyle (8th), Hansen in the 100 breaststroke (1st) and 200 breaststroke (2nd), Berens in the 200 freestyle (4th) and 100 freestyle (7th), Walters in the 200 freestyle (7th) and 100 freestyle (9th), Dax Hill in the 200 freestyle (8th), Clay Youngquist in the 200 freestyle (9th), Kip Darmody in the 100 backstroke (10th), Weber-Gale in the 50 freestyle (4th) and 100 freestyle (4th), Jimmy Feigen in the 50 freestyle (3rd) and 100 freestyle (5th), Eric Friedland in the 200 breaststroke (8th) and Austin Surhoff in the 200 IM (10th).
