MINNEAPOLIS -- Senior All-American Rainer Kendrick (Birmingham, Ala.) concluded his collegiate career by posting a runner-up performance in the 200-yard butterfly while classmate Nathan O'Brien (Sammamish, Wash.) wrapped up his final team meet by turning in All-America performances in both the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard butterfly to lead The University of Texas swimming and diving team during the final day of the 2005 NCAA Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Texas wrapped up the meet with a seventh-place finish with 236 points. Auburn won their third title in as many years with 491 points, while Stanford (414), Arizona (388), Cal-Berkeley (381), Florida (284) and Michigan (240) rounded out the top six.
The defending champion and 10 seed in the 200-yard butterfly entering the meet, Kendrick lowered his time from 1 minute, 43.94 seconds in the prelims to 1:43.02 in the final to finish second behind Michigan's Davis Tarwater, who won the event with a pool record time of 1:42.30. Kendrick then closed the books on his collegiate swimming career by helping Texas win the 'B' final of the 400-yard freestyle relay in 2:53.32 by swimming the second split. Kendrick wrapped up his career a 10-time All-American and eight-time All-America Honorable Mention award winner.
Swimming alongside Kendrick in the 200 butterfly and swimming in his second individual final on Saturday was O'Brien, who earned Texas 24 points to add to their team total after placing eighth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:47.82. O'Brien's performance came after he had turned in the sixth-fastest time of 1:42.28 in the 200-yard backstroke. A two-time All-American in the 200 backstroke entering the championships, O'Brien pulled off a tough chore of posting top-eight qualifying times in the 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly on Saturday morning en route to solidifying his third All-America certificate in the 200 backstroke and first in the 200 butterfly. O'Brien concluded his career a four-time All-American and a two-time All-America Honorable Mention.
Additional swimmers who scored in individual events for Texas on Saturday were sophomore Garrett Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wis.), who won the consolation final of the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 42.85, freshman Matthew McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C.), who also swam the 'B' final of the 100 freestyle and placed 14th in 43.68, and junior Christian Schurr (Austin, Texas), who placed 15th in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:58.53.
The final event of the meet saw McGinnis, Kendrick, senior Austin McAnally (McKinney, Texas) and Weber-Gale capture the top time (2:53.32) in the consolation final of the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Although the NCAA Championships marked the final team event of the season, many Texas swimmers will compete in the 2005 World Championship trials in Indianapolis, April 1-6.
Saturday's NCAA Championships Notes: Texas totaled fourteen athletes who won 41 All-America awards in 16 events at the 2005 NCAA Championships ... sophomore Garrett Weber-Gale earned All-America honors in six events - three individual, three relay - while freshman Matthew McGinnis captured All-America honors in each of five events - three individual, two relay - to lead the team ... senior Rainer Kendrick's time of 1:43.02 in the finals of the 200-yard butterfly marked a school record, surpassing his and the school's previous best of 1:43.38 set at the 2003 NCAA Championships ... Kendrick has now posted seven of Texas' top-10 times in that event ... Christian Schurr has now earned All-America Honorable Mention honors in the 200-yard breaststroke as a freshman and junior ... After swimming the third split on Texas' 400-yard freestyle relay team that finished ninth, senior Austin McAnally wrapped up his career a four-time All-American and with one All-America Honorable Mention award to his credit.
