Nine Swimmers qualify for finals at NCAA Championships

MINNEAPOLIS -- Nine swimmers from The University of Texas posted individual qualifying times and its 200-yard medley relay squad clocked the eighth-fastest time on the second of three preliminary sessions at the 2005 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center on Friday.
Freshman Daniel Rohleder (Austin, Texas) turned in qualifying times in each of two events - the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke - while senior All-American Daniel DiToro (Brant Rock, Mass.) and freshman All-American Matt McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C) posted the fourth-fastest times in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle, respectively, which was good for top qualifying spots for Texas on Friday morning. Of note, McGinnis' time of 1:34.42 ranks fifth on UT's top-10 list of individuals.

Rohleder and DiToro will compete in the championship final of the 100-yard butterfly with senior All-American and 2004 NCAA Champion in the 200-meter butterfly Rainer Kendrick (Birmingham, Ala.) earning a spot in the consolation final after posting the ninth-fastest morning swim.

Three events later in the 100-yard backstroke, Texas again qualified three swimmers and just missed a fourth as sophomore Thomas Sacco (Dallas, Texas), senior Nate O'Brien (Sammamish, Wash.) and Rohleder all posted consolation qualifying times with senior Andrew Davidson (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) narrowly missing the cut as he finished in 48.05, just .07 off the 16th and final qualifying spot.

Davidson helped Texas post the eighth-best time in the 200-yard medley relay, the first event of the Friday's prelims, as he combined with freshman Matt Lowe, (Minot, N.D.), DiToro and sophomore Tyler O'Halloran (Boardman, Ohio) to post a time of 1:27.06.

Lowe and junior Christian Schurr (Austin, Texas) added qualifying times in the 100-yard breaststroke clocking 54.02 and 54.41, respectively, to finish 10th and 15, while sophomore Garrett Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wis.) posted the 14th-fastest time (1:35.70) in the 200-yard freestyle.

Friday's finals events will begin at 7 p.m. CST. For daily updates, check back with TexasSports.com.
