Smith caps NCAA Zone D Diving Meet with platform victory
AUSTIN, Texas -- UT junior Brian Smith captured the platform-diving event to cap a solid, three-day NCAA Zone "D" Diving Meet for the Texas men Sunday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Smith Carrollton, Texas) officially earned his berth for competition in the upcoming NCAA Championships by taking the platform with a score of 620.30. With seven NCAA bids up for grabs in Zone "D", and only seven men competing, Smith was assured of a berth regardless of his finish in the platform event. However, as the platform champion, Smith took the first qualifying spot from Zone D to participate in the NCAA Championships.
"It was great to see Brian get better as the week progressed," said UT diving coach Matt Scoggin. "He started slowly on the one meter, did better in three meter and was excellent today on the tower (platform)."
Freshman Mike Wong (Cerritos, Calif.) placed fourth with a score of 589.40. He officially earned his NCAA berth on Friday by placing third in the one-meter event.
Smith and Wong will participate in the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships from March 15-17 in Minneapolis, Minn.
