Chandler, McBroom earn Big 12 weekly honors

Feb. 13, 2013

IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 Conference announced Wednesday the selections of Texas senior swimmer Michael McBroom as the league’s Men’s Swimmer of the Week and redshirt sophomore diver Will Chandler as the league’s Men’s Diver of the Week.

McBroom (The Woodlands, Texas) set the NCAA record in the 1000-yard freestyle with his mark of 8:43.48 against No. 1 Arizona and SMU (Feb. 1). McBroom’s performance broke the previous NCAA mark of 8:44.11 set by Michigan’s Chris Thompson in 2001. The 2011 NCAA champion also won the 500 freestyle in UT’s wins over the Wildcats and Mustangs. This marks McBroom’s second career selection as the Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week.

Chandler won three of five events in UT’s wins at TCU (Jan. 24) and at home against No. 1 Arizona and SMU. The Waco native posted a dominant performance in the three-meter event against TCU, as he totaled 432.53 points to win the event by 44 points. Chandler posted 381.80 points to win the three-meter event and 367.75 to win the one-meter event against Arizona and SMU. This marks Chandler’s third career selection as the Big 12 Men’s Diver of the Week.

Texas hosts the Big 12 Championships beginning Wednesday, Feb. 27 at UT’s Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
