Nation's top two teams to battle each other in Tucson
Jan. 27, 2012
AUSTIN, Texas -- In a dual meet featuring the two top-ranked teams in the country, the No. 2 Texas Men's Swimming and Diving team is set to battle No. 1 Arizona on Saturday in Tucson, Ariz. This will be Texas' third top-ten ranked opponent in as many weeks. Two weeks ago the Longhorns dominated a No. 8 Auburn team, winning 161-131 to improve to 4-1 in dual meets. The win included a 9:01.22 finish in the 1000 freestyle by Jackson Wilcox, which was the fastest time in the country at the time. Wilcox was chosen as the Big 12 Swimmer of the week on Wednesday. Also after the Auburn meet, senior Jimmy Feigen was named the Councilman Hunsaker Swimmer of the Week by CollegeSwimming.com. UT still holds the top time in the 800 freestyle relay this year. The Wildcat team has not lost a dual meet all season. Among the teams they've defeated this year are No. 3 Stanford, No. 5 USC and No. 6 California. Arizona swimmers hold the fastest times in the country in the 100 backstroke (Mitchell Friedemann), 200 backstroke (Cory Chitwood), 100 breaststroke (Kevin Cordes), 200 breaststroke (Carl Mickelson), 400 IM (Austen Thompson) and both the 200 and 400 medley relays. The Longhorns met the Wildcats last season in a double-dual meet that included SMU. Texas defeated both teams, including a commanding 186.5-155.5 win over Arizona. The meet featured several NCAA "B" cut finishes by Longhorn swimmers, including a 1:28.63 time in the 200-yard medley relay for a squad that included both Feigen and Wilcox. The dual meet is scheduled to begin at 12 noon (CT) at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in Tucson.
