McGinnis named Big 12 Swimmer of the Week
IRVING, Texas -- University of Texas junior Matt McGinnis was selected Wednesday as the Big 12 Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week after the All-American helped the top-ranked Longhorns to recent victories over No. 3 Auburn, No. 5 Arizona, No. 9 Georgia and SMU. McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C.) earned his second Big 12 swimmer-of-the-week selection on the strength of solid performances recorded throughout the month of January. McGinnis helped Texas end four-time defending NCAA Champion Auburn's 44-meet win streak on Jan. 11 by winning the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events at AU's James E. Martin Aquatics Center. On Jan. 13, McGinnis added a victory in the 200 freestyle (1:36.69) in the Longhorns' 161-135 win at ninth-ranked Georgia. On Jan. 19 and 20 against No. 5 Arizona and SMU, McGinnis helped UT to victory in the 200 freestyle relay, swimming the opening leg in 20.36, before adding a 200 freestyle win in 1:35.97. A Texas swimmer has been selected as the Big 12 Men's Swimmer of the Week for a third consecutive time. McGinnis initially earned league honors on Nov. 29, and UT sophomore Michael Klueh (Evansville, Ind.) garnered similar honors on Dec. 13. Texas ends the regular season on Saturday, Jan. 27 against Texas A&M in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. The meet is slated to begin at 2 p.m. Central at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
