No. 1 Men's Swimming and Diving claims six victories on day one of Texas Invitational
Dec. 4, 2008 Results - Day 1 Finals | Photo Gallery AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 1 Texas claimed six of seven events to successfully kick off the opening session of the Texas Invitational at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Texas opened the evening with a thrilling win in the 200 freestyle relay, which featured a sub-19 second anchor from freshman Jimmy Feigen. Walters opened the relay in 19.51 before giving way to junior Ben Van Roekel, who split 19.36. Sophomore Jonathan Jackson followed in 19.35 before handing off to Feigen, who split 18.98 on the anchor to give Texas the victory one one-hundredth of a second ahead of Arizona. Berens picked up his first of two victories in the 100 butterfly, where he scored a new personal best with a NCAA automatic-qualifying mark of 45.54. Texas picked up NCAA provisional-qualifying cuts from junior Hill Taylor, who took third in 46.69, and sophomore Matt Donch, who placed fifth in 47.55. Feigen and sophomore Brian Wilson tied for seventh at 47.69. Freshman Drew Livingston led a one-through-five Texas finish in the one-meter diving event. Livingston took first with 397.65 points, and senior Jonathan Wilcox took a close second with 394.00 points. Sophomore Matt Cooper took third with 361.30 points, and sophomore Matt Cardell placed fourth with 324.00 points. Junior Mike Wong added a fifth-place finish with 316.50 points. Senior Michael Klueh posted a NCAA automatic-qualifying mark of 4:15.34 for second place in the 500 freestyle. Freshman Jackson Wilcox took third in a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 4:16.42. Arizona's Bryan O'Connor appeared to have a victory in hand heading into the freestyle leg in the 200 IM, but Berens split a staggering 24.17 on the freestyle to chase down O'Connor and pick up the win in 1:43.73 for another NCAA "A" cut. Senior Agustin Magruder landed a NCAA "B" cut of 1:46.23 for fifth place, and Wilson took seventh in 1:47.18 for another NCAA "B" cut. Walters finished off the individual events with a win in the 50 freestyle in 19.33, good for another NCAA automatic-qualifying mark. Feigen took third in a NCAA "B" cut mark of 19.56. Texas finished off the evening with a close win over Arizona in the 400 medley relay. Taylor, Magruder, Berens and Walters captured the event in 3:09.10. UT leads the meet with 503.5 points, while Arizona sits in second with 343.5 points. Day two of the Texas Invitational begins Friday at 10 a.m. Central at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
