Men's Swimming and Diving takes lead on day one of Southwest Collegiate Plunge

Texas kicked off the 2012-13 campaign by taking the lead in the team standings through day one of the Southwest Collegiate Plunge.
Texas leads the event with 452 points while Texas A&M sits in second with 398 points. SMU is in third with 356 points, and Incarnate Word holds fourth place with 292 points. The Longhorns open competition for 2012-13 having finished no worse than second at the last five NCAA Championships.
The Longhorns opened the evening with a convincing win in the 400-yard medley relay, as sophomore Kip Darmody, senior Nick D'Innocenzo, sophomore Tripp Cooper and senior Dax Hill claimed the victory in 3 minutes, 19.99 seconds and eclipsed their nearest competitors by nearly three seconds. Darmody and Hill helped Texas claim the NCAA title in the 800 freestyle relay last March.
Coming off of productive spring and summer seasons, sophomore Clay Youngquist cruised to victory in the 500 freestyle, where he was victorious by six seconds in 4:25.50. Freshman Jon Martens placed third in 4:35.39, though freshman Sam Lewis handily won the consolation heat in 4:31.31.
Senior Austin Surhoff led a one-two Texas finish in the 200 individual medley. The former NCAA champion in the event was victorious in 1:51.73. D'Innocenzo took second in 1:53.10. Hill, a two-time All-American in the 100 freestyle, claimed victory in that event in 44.84. Sophomore Ben Anderson took fourth in 45.70. Sophomore Ryan Anthony and freshman Sean O'Brien scored took seventh and eighth place, respectively, in the one-meter diving event.
Sophomore Tripp Cooper placed second in the 100 butterfly in 51.50, while Darmody followed in fourth in 51.50. Hill won the consolation heat in 49.88. Surhoff notched his second individual win of the night in the 200 backstroke in 1:49.85. Freshman Ian LeMaistre placed fifth in 1:55.39. Lewis scored his second win in a consolation final and finished in 1:52.59.
Texas closed out the evening by winning the 200 freestyle relay, as Youngquist, junior Madison Wenzler, Anderson and Cooper finished in 1:22.08.
