No. 3 Men's Swimming and Diving looks to extend lead at Big 12 Championships

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- No. 3 Texas finished off another productive preliminary-round session and will look to extend its lead this evening on day three of the 2009 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships at the Mizzou Aquatics Center.

Sophomore Bryan Collins led the Texas qualifiers in the 400 IM and qualified first overall in 3:45.19, just off of his school and conference record. Freshman Hayes Johnson qualified second in 3:47.18. Junior Dan Nyaradi qualified third in 3:57.20, and as a member of the "B" team, he will qualify in tonight's consolation final.

Junior Hill Taylor qualified first in the 100 butterfly in 46.78, and sophomore Brian Wilson took second in 46.90. Freshman Neil Caskey, a member of the "B" team, qualified third in 47.04, and junior Ricky Berens took the fourth slot in 47.29. Junior Matt Donch qualified seventh in 47.53, and junior Andrew Wang, a "B" team member, qualified eighth in 48.02.

Junior Peter Jameson led the all qualifiers in the 200 freestyle in 1:34.67. Junior Dave Walters, the American record holder in the event, qualified third n 1:36.33, while senior Michael Klueh qualified fourth in 1:36.34. Senior Ryan Verlatti qualified fifth in 1:36.48, and freshman Jackson Wilcox landed the sixth slot in 1:36.71. Junior Ben Van Roekel took seventh in 1:36.74, and junior Jim Robertson qualified eighth in 1:37.05.


 

 

Freshman Eric Friedland qualified second overall in the 100 breaststroke in 54.14, and freshman Matt Hoyland, a member of the "B" team, took the second slot at 54.33. Senior Agustin Magruder took fifth in 54.80. Sophomore Scott Jostes landed a NCAA automatic cut in the 100 backstroke in 46.63, two days after securing a NCAA automatic berth in the 200 freestyle. Taylor qualified second in 47.05, and junior Alan Maher, a "B" team member, qualified fourth in 47.78. Senior Scott Trompeter, also a member of the "B" team, landed the sixth slot at 48.47.

Senior Jonathan Wilcox qualified fourth for the three-meter diving finals with 365.25 points. Sophomore Matt Cooper qualified fifth with 361.70. Today's three-meter diving finals get underway at 5 p.m. Central. The swimming finals begin at 6 p.m.
