No. 1 Men's Swimming and Diving takes commanding lead at Big 12 Championships
Feb. 26, 2010 COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- No. 1 Texas swept the six swimming events and assumed a commanding lead on day three of the 2010 Big 12 Championships at Texas A&M's Student Rec Center Natatorium. The Longhorns head into Saturday's final day of competition with 761 points, and Texas A&M sits in second with 572 points. Missouri is in third place with 476 points. Texas opened the night with a win in the 400-yard medley relay, as senior Ricky Berens, junior Scott Spann and seniors Hill Taylor and Dave Walters finished in 3:08.23, just one one-hundredth of a second off of the NCAA automatic-qualifying cut. Berens led off in 46.28 before Spann split 53.13 on the breaststroke. Taylor picked up the butterfly in 46.30, and Walters anchored in 42.52. Notably, Berens' lead-off of 46.28 is a NCAA automatic-qualifying mark in the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Drew Livingston led the Texas divers by taking second in the three-meter event with 425.00 points. Junior Matt Cooper took a close third with 423.80 points, and junior Matt Cardell placed fifth with 363.60 points. Junior Bryan Collins rewrote his own meet record in the 400 individual medley, as he claimed the event in 3:42.86, good for the fastest time in the country. Freshman Austin Surhoff added another NCAA automatic-qualifying mark and took second in 3:43.19, the second-fastest time in college swimming. Freshman Nick D'Innocenzo took third in the 400 individual medley with a NCAA "B" cut of 3:48.67, and sophomore Hayes Johnson took fourth with a NCAA "B" cut of 3:48.84. Freshman Conor Swanson claimed the consolation final with a "B" cut of 3:52.02, and senior Dan Nyaradi took second in 3:57.75. Berens added a victory in the 100 butterfly with a NCAA "B" cut of 46.34, and Taylor took third in 46.62. Sophomore Jimmy Feigen took fourth in 46.67, and sophomore Neil Caskey placed fifth in 47.34. Senior Andrew Wang claimed the consolation final with a NCAA "B" cut of 47.44. Junior Scott Jostes led a six-man Longhorns contingent in the 200 freestyle, where he took first with a NCAA "B" cut of 1:34.39. Senior Peter Jameson took second in 1:35.40, and junior Jim Robertson placed fourth in 1:37.12. Walters placed fifth in 1:37.57, and sophomore Jackson Wilcox took sixth in 1:37.84. Senior Ben Van Roekel edged a pair of Texas teammates in the consolation final, as he won with a time of 1:36.53. Freshman Dax Hill took second in 1:36.77, and freshman Kyle McNeilis took third in 1:36.92. Sophomore Eric Friedland collected his first career Big 12 title Friday evening, as he claimed the 100 breaststroke in a NCAA "B" cut of 53.44. Spann took second with a NCAA "B" cut of 53.56. Sophomore Matt Hoyland won the consolation final in 54.39. Taylor capped the evening with a win in the 100 backstroke with a NCAA "B" cut of 46.87. Caskey took third in 47.56, and Cragin placed fourth at 47.82. The fourth and final day of the Big 12 Championships begins Saturday at 10 a.m. Central.
