No. 1 Men's Swimming and Diving tops No. 19 Texas A&M, 141-100

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- No. 1 Texas won 10 of 13 events and cruised to a 141-100 victory over No. 19 Texas A&M Friday evening in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown at A&M’s Student Rec Center Natatorium. 

The win gives Texas another point in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown standings.  Texas holds a 6.5-1.5 lead in the season-long, all-sports series between the two schools.  Texas men’s swimming and diving has yet to surrender a point in the six seasons of the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. 

UT opened the evening with a tight win in the 200-yard medley relay, where freshman Cole Cragin, sophomore Eric Friedland and seniors Hill Taylor and Ricky Berens were victorious in 1 minute, 29.21 seconds.  Sophomore Jackson Wilcox followed with a victory in the 1,650 freestyle with a winning mark of 15:10.99. 

Senior Dave Walters was challenged by Texas A&M’s Balazs Makany in the 200 freestyle, but Walters, the 2008 NCAA champion in the event, prevailed in 1:38.06.  Sophomore Jimmy Feigen tacked on a win in the 50 freestyle in 19.90, and Taylor followed with a win in one of his premier events, the 100 butterfly, in 48.59.  Feigen later added a win in the 100 freestyle in 44.35. 

Junior Scott Spann led the Horns’ breaststroke contingent with a win at the 100-yard distance in 55.00.  Sophomore Neil Caskey edged his teammate, Taylor, in the 100 backstroke and was victorious in 49.16.  Junior Bryan Collins notched a win in the 400 individual medley in 3:57.42. 


 

 

Texas capped the evening with a win in the 200 freestyle relay, where Walters, junior Scott Jostes, Cragin and senior Ben Van Roekel.  Junior Matt Cooper paced the Texas diving contingent with second-place finishes in the one-meter event (346.95) and the three-meter event (367.36). 

Sophomore Drew Livingston competed Friday at the USA Diving Winter National Championships in Columbus, Ohio and advanced to Sunday’s platform diving finals with a sixth-place total of 399.25 points in the semifinals.      
Texas resumes competition on Saturday at SMU.  The meet is set for a 5 p.m. Central start.
