No. 1 Men's Swimming and Diving tops No. 5 Auburn, 130.5-110.5
Jan. 7, 2010 AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 1 Texas (2-0) scored two wins apiece from senior Ricky Berens and sophomores Jackson Wilcox and Jimmy Feigen on its way to a 130.5-110.5 win over No. 5 Auburn Thursday afternoon at UT’s Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The Longhorns opened the meet by taking second in the 400-yard medley relay, as freshman Cole Cragin, junior Scott Spann and seniors Hill Taylor and Ben Van Roekel finished in a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 3:14.69. The Horns answered with a one-two showing in the 1,000 freestyle, where sophomore Jackson Wilcox took the win at 9:16.48. Junior Jim Robertson took second at 9:21.01. Senior Dave Walters and Auburn’s Tyler McGill registered a rare tie in the 200 freestyle with NCAA “B” cuts of 1:37.34. Texas junior Scott Jostes took third overall at 1:38.30. Senior Ricky Berens notched his first win of the afternoon in the 200 IM, where he was victorious with a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 1:47.79. Sophomore Jimmy Feigen added a tight victory in the next event, the 50 freestyle, as he edged Auburn’s Adam Brown in 19.90.
Junior Matt Cooper led the Texas diving contingent in the one-meter event, where he took top honors with 340.27 points. Sophomore Drew Livingston placed third with 327.07 points. Berens returned to complete an impressive double, as he claimed the 200 butterfly in 1:46.68. Feigen notched his own double after winning the 100 freestyle with a NCAA “B” cut of 44.01. Walters placed third in 44.65. Texas put the meet well out of Auburn’s reach in the 500 freestyle, where the Longhorns placed first through third. Wilcox scored his second win in 4:29.38, and junior Scott Jostes took second at 4:30.47. Robertson placed third in 4:31.25. Livingston finished off a Texas sweep of the diving events, as he claimed the three-meter event with 406.35 points. Cooper placed third with 388.87 points. Sophomore Eric Friedland led Texas in the 200 breaststroke by taking second in a NCAA “B” cut of 1:59.47. Spann placed third in 2:01.54. The Horns finished off the meet with a thrilling win in the 400 freestyle relay, which UT trailed through 350 yards. Senior Ben Van Roekel led off in 44.64 before Walters picked up the second leg in 43.46. Feigen split 43.46 on the third leg before Berens anchored for the win in 43.62, as the relay finished in 2:55.11 and topped Auburn’s effort of 2:55.35. Texas takes on Georgia on Saturday, Jan. 9 for Senior Day at UT’s Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The meet gets underway at 11 a.m. Central. |
