Men’s Golf announces three prep signees
AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas head men’s golf coach John Fields announced Thursday that three prep standouts have signed National Letters of Intent for the 2007-08 academic year. Donald Constable (Deephaven, Minn./Minnetonka HS), Steffan Schmieding (Austin, Texas/Westlake HS) and Julio Cesar Vegas Romero (Maturin, Venezuela/Cicilio Acosta HS) have signed on with the Longhorns and will enroll at UT in the fall of 2007. Constable is a 2006 FCWT (Future Collegians World Tour) first-team All-American and the 2006 FCWT Midwest Regional Player of the Year. Constable, a left-handed golfer who also plays hockey, is the 2006 Minnesota state high school champion. “We’re excited about bringing Donald to Austin,” Fields said. “He has a great attitude and will enhance our entire program.” Schmieding, the grandson of UT Men’s Athletics Director DeLoss Dodds, is the captain of the golf team at Westlake High School. “Steffan is a big guy who has tons of talent,” Fields said. “He has tremendous length in his game and will have an incredible upside at The University of Texas.” Vegas, the younger brother of UT senior men’s golfer Jhonattan Vegas, was the 2005 Venezuelan National Junior Champion. He finished as the runner-up to his older brother at the 2006 Venezuelan National Amateur Championships. “Julio is a wonderful young player, and we’re excited to have him,” Fields said. “He is cut from the same cloth as Jhonattan. He is a tremendously long and gifted golfer.”
