MORE ON THE TOURNAMENT: The Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic has been played nearly every year in El Paso since 1974. Texas-Ex Randy Simmons won the event in 1975 and is the only Longhorn to win the event.
Along with UT’s Frittelli and Gribble, the event features players such as Oklahoma State’s Peter Uihlein and 2010 NCAA champion Scott Langley of Illinois. Former champions include the likes of PGA Tour veterans Tiger Woods (Stanford, 1995), Ricky Barnes (Arizona, 2000) and David Duval (Georgia Tech, 1991). Alumni of the event have earned more than $1.3 billion and won 540 events on the PGA Tour.
Each university with a competing student-athlete receives a $1,000 scholarship. Texas-Ex Lance Lopez competed in the event last season and placed 28th overall.
