Men's Golf claims top spot in Golf World/Nike Golf Men's Division I Coaches Poll

Nov. 2, 2011

NEW YORK -- After winning its final three tournaments of the fall, Texas has claimed the top spot in the Golf World/Nike Golf Men's Division I Coaches' Poll released today. The Longhorns earned 18 of the 23 available first place votes to become the No. 1 team in the poll for the first time since it was revived to start the 2001-02 season.

Led by freshman Jordan Spieth, Texas has claimed three straight tournaments for the first time since spring 2002. The average margin of victory in the events has been 20.67 strokes.

Auburn, the top team in the previous Golf World poll, dropped one spot to No. 2, while Oregon, also a three-time winner to start the 2011-12 season, leaped from the No. 20 spot to No. 3. Rounding out the top five are Arkansas and Stanford.

The Golf World/Nike Golf poll is conducted by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Voting closed Oct. 27, 2011.

Earlier this week, the Longhorns topped the latest edition of the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings (Oct. 31). Spieth is ranked the No. 1 individual collegiate player for the first time this season, and senior Dylan Frittelli came in at No. 2.
