NEXT UP:  After finishing second in its last two events, Texas (#4 Golfstat) concludes the fall season with the 12-team Baylor Intercollegiate. 

WHERE:  Royal Oaks Country Club (par 71, 7,068 yards) – Dallas, Texas

WHEN:  Monday, Oct. 26, 8:30 a.m. Central, shotgun start (36 holes); Tuesday, Oct. 27, 8:30 a.m. Central (18 holes)

THE TOURNAMENT FIELD:  Arkansas, host Baylor, BYU, Iowa, Lamar, New Mexico, Oklahoma, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M, Tulsa and Texas-San Antonio.

TEXAS STARTERS
Dylan Frittelli (So. - Pretoria, South Africa)
• placed second (-9) in the Horns’ most recent event, the UTSA Lone Star Invitational
• placed 27th at the season-opening Topy Cup in Tanagura, Japan
• started all 12 events last season

Cody Gribble (Fr. – Dallas, Texas)
• fourth career college start
• in his first collegiate appearances this season,  placed third overall at the Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational, second at the rain-shortened Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and third at last week’s UTSA Lone Star Invitational
• has been ranked as high as No. 1 in Golfweek’s Sagarin Performance Index; now ranks No. 2 nationally behind Oklahoma State’s Trent Whitekiller

Alex Moon (So. – Plano, Texas)
• tied for 24th (+6) at the season-opening Topy Cup in Japan

Donald Constable (Jr. – Wayzata, Minn.)
• second start of the season after starting all 12 events last season
• tied for 12th (+2) at last week’s UTSA Lone Star Invitational


 

 

Steffan Schmieding (So. – Austin, Texas)
• second career start
• placed 53rd (+18) at last week’s UTSA Lone Star Invitational

Johnathan Schnitzer (Fr. – Houston, Texas)
• playing as an individual; first varsity start

LAST TIME OUT:  Texas placed second last week at the UTSA Lone Star Invitational at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio.  The Horns finished at 6-under par in the 54-hole event.  Sophomore Dylan Frittelli took second at 9-under par, one shot behind the tournament medalist, and freshman Cody Gribble scored his third top-three individual finish in as many events, as he placed third at 8-under par. 

LAST SEASON: Texas registered six top-five finishes, including two victories, in 12 events played during the 2008-09 season.  The Longhorns opened last season by sharing the team championship with LSU at the 2008 Gopher Invitational in Wayzata, Minn.  UT added a victory at the 19-team Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational last fall in Kahuku, Hawaii.

Texas placed eighth at the Big 12 Championships last spring before taking third at the NCAA Austin Regional Championship at The University of Texas Golf Club to qualify for the NCAA Championships.  Texas placed 26th in the 30-team field at the NCAA Championships.

WHO RETURNS:  Texas returns four student-athletes who started all 12 events last season, and another, junior Lance Lopez, who competed in 11 of 12 events.  Lopez earned honorable mention All-America honors from the Golf Coaches’ Association of America (GCAA) last season after winning the NCAA Austin Regional Championship.  Senior Charlie Holland enjoyed a productive summer that culminated with a semifinals appearance at the U.S. Amateur Championship last month in Tulsa, Okla.

Juniors Bobby Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) and Donald Constable (Wayzata, Minn.) started all 12 events last season and contributed one top-10 individual finish apiece.  Sophomores Adam Wennerstrom (Austin, Texas), Steffan Schmieding (Austin, Texas), Brett Spencer (Plano, Texas) and redshirt freshman Julio Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) are joined by true freshmen Cody Gribble (Dallas, Texas) and Johnathan Schnitzer (Houston, Texas).
