OWINGS, Md. -- Tenth-ranked Texas tied for fourth place at the PING/Golfweek Preview held at Caves Valley Golf Club (Par 70, 7,124 yards) with a three-day total of 22-over-par (284-289-289=862) on Monday, Sept. 27. The Longhorns finished 14 strokes behind winner No. 6 Oklahoma State, who finished the three-round tournament at eight-over-par (288-276-284=848). Junior Matthew Rosenfeld (Plano, Texas) finished second on the individual leaderboard with a three-round total of two-under-par (70-71-67=208), just two shots behind medalist Pablo Martin of Oklahoma State (69-66-71=206). Fellow-junior Matthew Mills (London, England) tied for seventh with a one-over-par 211.
"With such a tough field, it is definitely encouraging to know that we didn't play our best golf and we still finished fourth," said Texas head coach John Fields. "Matthew Rosenfeld put himself in position to take the medalist honors and I think it was a coming out party for Matthew Mills, so I am very pleased with our play at the Preview."
Texas started the day in fourth place at 13-over-par and shot a combined nine-over-par on Monday to finish the tournament at 22-over-par, tied with top-ranked Florida. The Longhorns shot a four-over-par 284 in the morning session on Sunday and followed that with a nine-over-par 289 in the second round.
Individually, Rosenfeld started the tournament with a one-over-par 71 followed by an even-par round on Sunday evening. He was tied for seventh going into the final round and his three-under-par 67 on Monday moved him up to second on the individual list. After following a one-over-par 71 opening round with two even par rounds, Mills finished the tournament tied for seventh with Roberto Castro of Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State's Tyler Leon.
Sophomore Farren Keenan (Middlesex, England) tied for 43rd at 12-over-par after shooting his second consecutive six-over-par 76. He opened the tournament on Sunday morning with an even par 70. Junior Jeff Bell (Plano, Texas) finished two shots behind Keenan at 14-over-par, while senior Shaun Goodwin tied for 62nd at 18-over-par.
