Men's Golf preview: PING/Golfweek Preview

UP NEXT: Texas (No. 2 Golf World/Nike; No. 2 Golfweek) will travel to Alpharetta, Ga., this weekend to participate in the PING/Golfweek Preview hosted by Georgia Tech. Since its inception in 1989, the Preview has brought together 15 prospective contenders for the NCAA title at the venue for that year's Division I championship. It is co-sponsored by PING and Golfweek magazine. COURSE: Capital City Club Crabapple Course (par-70; 7,246 yards). Capital City Club will play host to the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship. WHEN: Tee times begin at 10 a.m. Central Sunday and Monday, and 9 a.m. for Tuesday’s final round. The Longhorns are set to begin first-round action alongside top-ranked Alabama and No. 3 California at 10:50 a.m. off the first tee. Pairings for Monday’s second round will be based off of first-round team scores. TOURNAMENT FIELD: Fourteen of the 15 teams at this year's Preview are ranked in the top 25 Golf World/Nike Golf men’s preseason coaches’ poll, including seven of the top eight teams (only No. 6 Auburn is missing) - Alabama (No. 1), Arkansas (8), California (3), Chattanooga, Florida State (16), Georgia (19), Kent State (18), New Mexico (23), San Diego State (17), TEXAS (2), Texas A&M (10), UCLA (4), UNLV (13) and Washington (5). LAST TIME OUT: The defending NCAA Men’s Golf Champions began the 2012-13 season in winning fashion as the No. 2 Texas Longhorns (293-266-292=851, -13) claimed the Carpet Capital Collegiate by a five-stroke at The Farms Golf Club. Freshman Brandon Stone (69-63-72=204, -12) earned medalist honors in his collegiate debut, while sophomore All-American Jordan Spieth (70-66-70=206, -10) finished tied for second place.
LIVE SCORING: PING/Golfweek Preview LINEUP: Texas’ starting five for the Preview will be freshman Brandon Stone (1), sophomore Jordan Spieth (2), seniors Julio Vegas (3) and Cody Gribble (4), and junior Toni Hakula (5). Spieth, Vegas, Gribble and Hakula made up four of Texas’ starters in the 2012 NCAA Championship at Riviera Country Club where the Longhorns claimed their third championship in program history. |
