Men's Golf preview: Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic
WHAT: Texas kicks off the season on Friday, Sept. 15 at the 18-team Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic. WHERE: The tournament will be played at The Farm Golf Club, a par 72, 7,010-yard course in Dalton, Ga. The course is a Tom Fazio design. WHEN: The tournament field will play 18 holes each day from Friday, Sept. 15 through Sunday, Sept. 17. WHO: The tournament features host Georgia Tech, Clemson, Duke, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Alabama, Florida, Auburn, South Carolina, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Augusta State, Texas Tech, Texas, TCU, Georgia State and East Tennessee State. Eleven of these teams comprised over one-third of the field at the 2006 NCAA Men's Golf Championships. LONGHORN STARTERS: UT coach John Fields will send junior Kevin Schultz (Richardson, Texas), senior Farren Keenan (Middlesex, England), sophomore Charlie Holland (Dallas, Texas), junior Jace Moore (Southlake, Texas) and freshman Lance Lopez (Missouri City, Texas) to represent the Longhorns. SCHULTZ CLAIMS MASSINGILL TROPHY: The aforementioned Kevin Schultz took top honors on Sunday, Sept. 10 at the 63rd annual Massingill Tournament, a preseason intrasquad golf outing. The top-five finishers at the yearly event represent Texas at the team's first fall tournament. Beginning in 1944, the Massingill Tournament was once the only way to become a member of the Texas men's golf program. The tourney was open to all men attending The University of Texas, and the top qualifiers were invited to join the Longhorns' squad. PGA Tour veteran Justin Leonard is the only four-time winner of the Massingill Trophy. He took top honors in the tournament from 1991-94. Tom Kite took top honors in 1970, and Ben Crenshaw won the tournament in each of the following three seasons - 1971-73.
