Men's Golf notebook: Sept. 12
AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas coach John Fields welcomes four newcomers to the 2006-07 Longhorn men's golf squad, but one of those new faces, and the most recent addition to the team comes to Austin with three years of collegiate golf experience to his credit. Senior Matt Bortis (Springfield, Mo.), a transfer from Arkansas, has joined Fields' program after completing three solid seasons as a Razorback.Bortis is a two-time second team All-SEC selection and finished in a tie for 24th place at the 2006 NCAA Central Regional Championships.He nearly qualified for the 2006 NCAA Championships as an individual, but his NCAA regional score fell two strokes shy of qualification. Bortis joins freshmen Bobby Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.), Robert Lopez (Missouri City, Texas) and Austin Traweek (Cypress, Texas) as newcomers to the Texas men's golf program. Vegas Victorious in Venezuela Vegas returns to Texas for his final season after posting the third-lowest stroke average for the Longhorns in 2006.He scored the top finish for Texas at three tournaments, including fifth-place finishes at the Hilo Intercollegiate and the Hall of Fame Invitational. Longhorns Open Fall Play This Week The tournament runs Friday through Sunday, Sept. 15-17 at The Farm Golf Course, a par 72, 7,010-yard Tom Fazio design.
