Stone named Golfweek National Player of the Week
Sept. 11, 2012 ORLANDO, Fla. -- Texas freshman Brandon Stone was selected as the Golfweek National Player of the Week, the magazine announced Tuesday. Additionally, the Longhorns earned the season-opening distinction of Golfweek Team of the Week. The South African, Golfweek's second-ranked freshman, opened his college career with a two-shot victory at the Carpet Capital Collegiate. He shot 12-under 204, including a tournament-record 63 in the second round. Stone entered the event at No. 30 in the R&A's World Amateur Golf Ranking. The Longhorns started their NCAA title defense with a five-shot victory at the Carpet Capital Collegiate. Texas' 13-under 851 total included a tournament-record 266 in the second round. In addition to Stone’s individual title, sophomore All-American Jordan Spieth finished second, two shots behind Stone. The Longhorns resume the 2012-13 season in just under two weeks at the PING/Golfweek Preview (Sept. 23-25) in Atlanta, Ga., at the Capitol City Club, site of the 2013 NCAA Championship.
