Men's Golf ranks No. 23 in GolfWorld preseason poll
Sept. 3, 2009
AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas opens at No. 23 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Preseason Coaches' Poll released Thursday as part of Golf World's college preview issue.
UT is one of four Big 12 Conference representatives in the poll, as Oklahoma State ranks No. 1, Texas A&M ranks No. 7 and Texas Tech comes in at No. 24. The Longhorns return all five of their 2009 NCAA Championships competitors and add in-state standouts Cody Gribble (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park H.S.) and Johnathan Schnitzer (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid H.S.).
Golf World named UT senior Charlie Holland and the aforementioned Gribble to its "Top 50 Male Players to Watch" list for the 2009-10 season. Holland reached the semifinals at the U.S. Amateur Championship last month, and Gribble arrives at UT with victories in three AJGA (American Junior Golf Association) tournaments under his belt. Gribble is one of only five freshmen highlighted by Golf World as players to watch.
Texas opens fall play next week at the Topy Cup in Tanagura, Japan, where it will meet No. 2 Washington, Colorado State and Michigan State.
