Aug. 29, 2012

NEW YORK -- Defending 2012 NCAA Champion Texas ranks No. 2 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Men's Division I Preseason Coaches' Poll released Wednesday. The Longhorns enter the 2012-13 season on the heels of claiming their third national title in program history and first since 1972.

Texas returns four members of its starting lineup including sophomore All-American and Big 12 Conference Player of the Year Jordan Spieth. Seniors Julio Vegas and Cody Gribble and junior Toni Hakula round out Texas' veteran squad that won eight team titles last season.

National runner-up Alabama claimed the top spot in the preseason poll with 13 of the 23 available first-place votes. California, UCLA and Washington came in third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Longhorns begin the 2012-13 season next weekend at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga.
