Spieth advances to Round of 16 at U.S. Men's Amateur Championship

ERIN, Wis. -- Texas freshman Jordan Spieth advanced to the U.S. Men's Amateur Championhip Round of 16 Thursday after capturing 2 and 1 and 4 and 3 wins in the Rounds of 64 and 32, respectively.

Spieth, the 2009 and 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, held a 1 up lead over Lee Bedford during most of Thursday afternoon's match at Erin Hills. The duo was all square when Bedford won the 12th hole until Spieth won back-to-back holes at 16 and 17 to put the match away.

Earlier in the day, Spieth defeated No. 43 Jade Scott.

Senior Dylan Frittelli won his first match 5 and 4 against Jim Markovitz before falling by the same score to reigning champion Peter Uihlein in the Round of 32. Frittelli led early, twice gaining a 1 up advantage over the first four holes.

Spieth faces No. 6-seed Ben Geyer at 8:40 a.m. Central on Friday. With a win, he would advance to the quarterfinal round at 2 p.m. where he would take on the victor of No. 30 John Hahn/No. 46 Jack Senior.

The 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play followed by six rounds of match play, with the championship scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final on Sunday.
