Aug. 25, 2009
TULSA, Okla. -- University of Texas senior Charlie Holland and sophomore Alex Moon finished the opening two rounds tied for 32nd place to secure two of the match-play bids up for grabs Tuesday at the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championship. Holland (Dallas, Texas), a quarterfinalist at the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship, shot a 78 on Monday at Southern Hills Country Club before rebounding with a two-under 68 on Tuesday at Cedar Ridge Country Club. Holland birdied four consecutive holes on the back nine and qualified for match play by two strokes with his six-over 146 in stroke play. Moon (Plano, Texas) shot a two-over 72 on Monday at Cedar Ridge before following with a four –over 74 on Tuesday at Southern Hills. Moon matched Holland’s six-over 146 to qualify for match play, as they became the first pair of current Longhorns to reach the U.S. Amateur match-play rounds since Russell Surber and David Gossett in 1999. Gossett went on to capture the U.S. Amateur crown in 1999. Holland and Moon begin match play on Wednesday at Southern.
