Vegas reaches U.S. Amateur quarterfinals

SAN FRANCISCO -- Former University of Texas men's golf standout Jhonattan Vegas scored a decisive 6 and 4 victory over Kyle Dickey Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the 2007 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship at The Olympic Club.

Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) led Dickey from start-to-finish, taking the lead after the first hole before finishing off the victory at the 14th hole. Vegas held a 3-up lead after six holes before Dickey took the next two to trail 1-up after eight holes.

Vegas, however, took command of the match, as he claimed the next four holes to assume a 5-up lead after 12 holes. When Vegas and Dickey halved the 13th hole, Vegas' victory was all but clinched, as Dickey would have to win the next five holes to continue the match.

Vegas clinched the victory when he birdied the par 4, 417-yard 14th hole, while Dickey managed a bogey.

Vegas, who completed his collegiate eligibility last spring at the NCAA Championships, will meet Cheng Tsung Pan of Chinese Taipei on Friday beginning at 12:30 p.m. CT. The Golf Channel will provide two hours of tape-delayed U.S. Amateur coverage beginning at 7:30 p.m. CT.
