Vegas reaches round of 16 at U.S. Amateur Golf Championship
SAN FRANCISCO -- Former University of Texas golf standout Jhonattan Vegas knocked off Vanderbilt's Jon Curran to reach the round of 16 Thursday at the 2007 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship at The Olympic Club. Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) needed only 13 holes to score a 7 and 5 victory over Curran in the match play round of 32. Vegas and Curran halved the first hole before Vegas took the next three to assume a 3-up lead. Curran drew within 2-up after five holes, but that would be as close as he would get, as Vegas did not yield a hole through the remainder of the round. Vegas held a 3-up lead over Kyle Dickey after six holes. Another victory would elevate Vegas into Friday's quarterfinals. Vegas completed his Longhorn career last spring at the NCAA Championships, where he tied for 39th place.
