MAMARONEK, N.Y. -- Former University of Texas stand-out Jason Hartwick (Sacramento, Calif.) advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Golf Championships at Winged Foot Golf Club (West Course - 7,266 years, par 70; East Course - 6,775 yards, par 70) after defeating Jeff Hood 4 and 3 and Tim Hogarth 3 and 2 on Thursday, August 19.
Hartwick fell behind early in his match with Hood, but quickly turned it around. After taking holes six through nine, Hartwick found himself 4-up going into the second half of the match. Twice Hood was able to trim the lead to 3-up, but a Hartwick birdey on number 15 put the match out of reach.
Hartwick advanced to face 38-year-old Tim Hogarth in the third round. The two were even in the round until Hartwick took a slight 1-up advantage with a par on number nine. On the back nine, Hartwick slowly pulled away and ended up with the victory, 3 and 2.
Hartwick will take on Ryan Moore, stroke play medalist and 2004 NCAA Medalist, in his quarterfinal match on Friday, August 20 at 12:15 p.m.
