Hartwick advances to round two at U.S. Amateur

MAMARONEK, N.Y. -- Former University of Texas stand-out Jason Hartwick (Sacramento, Calif.) birdied the 19th hole of his match against Tommy Medina to advance to round two of match play at the U.S. Amateur Golf Championships at Winged Foot Golf Club (West Course - 7,266 years, par 70). Hartwick will face California's Jeff Hood in the next round after he defeated Patrick Sullivan 3 and 1.

Hartwick and Medina, playing on the West Course, stood even after the first two holes. Hartwich took the first advantage, going one-up after three. The match moved back to all square after seven and remained that way through the rest of the front nine and number 10. Hartwick jumped ahead again with a birdie on 11 but a bogey on 12 brought the match back to all square. A par on 14 put Hartwick back in the lead, one-up, but two straight bogeys saw him go from a one hole lead to a one hole deficit. Both Hartwick and Medina made par on 17, so Hartwick needed to win the 18th hole to continue the match. Medina made par, but Hartwick birdied to force the match into extra holes. Hartwick birdied number one (19th hole of the match) to take the match and advance to the second round of the match play tournament.

Hartwick's second round match will begin at 8 a.m. Eastern (7 a.m. Central) on Thursday, August 19, when he will take on Jeff Hood from Atascadero, Calif.
