Hartwick in second after weather-shortened day at U.S. Amateur

MAMARONEK, N.Y. -- Former University of Texas stand-out Jason Hartwick (Sacramento, Calif.) finished the opening day of the U.S. Amateur at Winged Foot Golf Club tied for second after shooting even par (70). He is three shots behind leader Oscar Alvarez, who was the only golfer to shoot under par on the day. 36 golfers have yet to finish their first rounds due to lightning that halted play at 7:10 p.m.

Hartwick got off to a great start, birdeying number one, but followed that up with a bogey on number two. A double-bogey on number seven and a bogey on number eight had him at plus four, but a birdie at nine seemed to get the momentum turned around. He opened up the back side with two consecutive birdies, then birdied both 13 and 15 to charge to a three-under back nine and even par for the day.

Hartwick will hit the course tomorrow at 8:50 a.m., starting on number 10.
