Spieth falls in Round of 64 at 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship

Aug. 15, 2012

CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. -- Texas sophomore All-American Jordan Spieth fell 1 up in Tuesday’s Round of 64 at the U.S. Amateur Championship to reigning individual NCAA Champion Thomas Pieters at Cherry Hills Golf Course.

Although Spieth birdied the first hole, Pieters took an early lead in the match when he holed out from the fairway for eagle. Spieth squared the match on the following hole with par, and the match remained all square over the next five holes. At the par-3, 261-yard No. 8, Pieters regained an edge when Spieth bogeyed. Pieters birdied the ninth hole to take his largest lead of the match, and he remained 2 up until Spieth birdied No. 14.

On 17, Spieth was unable to convert a four-foot birdie putt to square the match. Both players bogeyed the final hole en route to Pieters’ victory.

The U.S. Amateur champion will be determined by a 36-hole match-play final on Sunday.
