Aug. 14, 2012
CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. -- Texas sophomore All-American Jordan Spieth finished the stroke-play portion of the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship at 3-under-par 138 after carding back-to-back 69s on Monday and Tuesday at Cherry Hills Country Club. Spieth, a two-time U.S. Junior Amateur champion and 2011 USA Walker Cup member, finished stroke play tied for seventh place and advances to the Round of 64 that begins Wednesday in a match-play format. Spieth’s second round on the Cherry Hills course began with a birdie on 10 before the long driver followed with another on the longest par-4 of the course, the 517-yard No. 14. Spieth bogeyed the following hole, but bookended his first nine with a birdie on 18 to turn at -2. On the front nine, Spieth carded his fourth birdie at No. 1 and played the next six holes at even. His second blemish of the round – and just his fourth in 36 holes – came on the par-3 eighth hole. Spieth made par on his closing hole to finish the front nine at even. A total of 50 players punched their tickets to the Round of 64 by finishing at +1 or better. On Wednesday morning, 17 players at +2 will play for the final 14 positions before match-play pairings are announced.
