Men's Golf concludes first-round action at U.S. Amateur Championship

USGA U.S. Amateur Championship live scoring link (stroke play rounds) CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. -- Sophomore All-American Jordan Spieth lead the Texas Men's Golf contingent in first-round action of the U.S. Amateur Championship with a 1-under-par 69 at the CommonGround Golf Course. Spieth, a two-time U.S. Junior Amateur champion (2009, 2011), is tied for 32nd place after Monday's opening round. Redshirt junior Johnathan Schnitzer carded an even 71 in his morning round on the Cherry Hill course and is tied for 46th place. Freshman Brandon Stone finished his afternoon round on CommonGround at 2-over 72 and is tied for 84th. Sophomore Kramer Hickok sits at 3-over 73 to tie for 119th and senior Cody Gribble is tied for 147th at +4. Both Longhorns played in afternoon pairings with Hickok on CommonGround and Gribble on Cherry Hills. Bobby Wyatt leads the field at 7-under 64 (Cherry Hills). Six players carded 5-under 65's on CommonGround and are tied for second. On Tuesday, Hickok (8:20 a.m), Gribble (9:10 a.m.), Stone (9:10 a.m.) and Spieth (9:40 a.m.) will play in morning rounds while Schnitzer (2:25 p.m.) will compete in the afternoon. The players are scheduled to switch courses for second-round play with Hickok (1), Stone (1) and Spieth (10) playing Cherry Hills CC (par 71; 7,432 yards) and Gribble and Schnitzer set to play CommonGround CC (par 70; 7,351 yards).
Tuesday's second round concludes the 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying. After the first two days, the field of players will be cut to the lowest 64 scores. Starting Wednesday, Aug. 15, contestants play match-play with the champion being determined by a 36-hole match-play final on Sunday. |
