Men's Golf signee Jordan Spieth wins 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship
July 23, 2011 BREMERTON, Wash. – Texas men’s golf signee Jordan Spieth joined Tiger Woods to become only the second multiple winner of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship Saturday afternoon at Gold Mountain Golf Club. Spieth (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Jesuit) added the 2011 crown to his 2009 U.S. Junior Amateur title when he claimed a 6 and 5 victory over Chelso Barrett in Saturday’s deciding match. In the 36-hole match play session that decided the tournament champion, Spieth trailed Barrett through the first five holes before squaring the match at the sixth hole. Spieth held a 1-up lead through holes eight and nine and regained the lead at the 13th hole after Barrett evened the match at the 10th hole. Spieth led the rest of the way en route to his 6 and 5 victory. “It’s a thrill to see a young man accomplish such a lofty goal,” UT head coach John Fields said. “It’s an historic feat to win multiple U.S. Junior Amateur titles, and it is exciting that Jordan will be a Longhorn. It’s just an incredible feat for Jordan.” Spieth will enroll at Texas next month along with Kramer Hickok (Plano, Texas/Trinity Christian) and Tayler Termeer (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis).
