June 21, 2012
NORMAN, Okla. -- Texas Men's Golf standouts Dylan Frittelli and Jordan Spieth have been named to the 2012 All-Nicklaus Team, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Thursday. Players from Division I, II, III, NAIA and NJCAA were eligible for the 24-member team that recognizes outstanding play during the past collegiate season. Named a co-recipient of the 2012 Byron Nelson Award and a semifinalist for The Ben Hogan Award, Frittelli totaled 11 top-10 finishes in 15 events last season. He shared tri-medalist honors at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate with Spieth and junior Julio Vegas, and also finished as the runner-up in four events. Last month, Frittelli earned PING All-American honors for the third consecutive year and was named to the Golfweek All-American First Team. He is making his professional debut this week at the European Tour BMW International Open in Cologne, Germany. Spieth led Texas in its championship season with a 70.92 stroke average, marking the lowest by a Longhorn since Jason Hartwick averaged 70.87 in the 2003-04 season. Spieth collected his first of three medalist honors at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in October before finishing first at The Amer Ari and Morris Williams Intercollegiate in the spring. The 2012 Big 12 Player and Freshman of the Year was one of three finalists for The Ben Hogan Award and also earned PING All-American and All-Freshman honors as well as Golfweek All-American accolades. Most recently, Spieth finished as the low amateur at the 2012 U.S. Open Championship. The All-Nicklaus Team was created in 2008 and is named for one of history's greatest players and a long-time supporter of collegiate and amateur golf. Jack Nicklaus, a former NCAA Champion, helped inspire and create the Jack Nicklaus Awards in 1988. The Nicklaus Award is annually given to the top collegiate men's golfer in Divisions I, II, III, the NAIA and the NJCAA.
